BlackBerry.com today released updated drivers for PocketMac 4.1, “to correct connectivity issues with BlackBerry smartphones, including the BlackBerry Bold and BlackBerry Storm.”

The USB driver update also corrects connectivity issues for Apple MacBook computers released in October 2008. The driver update must be installed only after PocketMac 4.1 is installed.

Critical Security Vulnerability Found in BlackBerry Desktop Software

dm_security_properties-2
dm_security_properties-2

A “critical” security vulnerability has been found in the BlackBerry Desktop Software in a knowledge base article (see KB16469) published by R.I.M. on Nov. 27th, and confirmed by Secunia, a leading vulnerability intelligence provider.

In short, the KB article states “Desktop Manager includes the Roxio® Media Manager for managing media synchronization … includes a Microsoft® ActiveX® control used for retrieving and installing application updates”.

While it is important that users with this vulnerability update and patch their system, we are not calling for a panic! What to do? Make the jump for the details…

According to Daphne, BlackBerryForums.com’s own resident security expert, users should examine the file properties of the ‘agent.exe’ file. Follow the directions below. Please note that is our understanding if you have Desktop Manager installed without Roxio, check the file still, but you should not need to upgrade according to my understanding.

A) Look at your PC, navigate to c: > Program Files > Common Files > Install Shield > Update Service. See the screenshot below:

dm_security_properties

B) Once you are in the ‘update service’ folder, right click on the ‘agent.exe’ file > click on Properties > then click on the Versions tab > and finally, click on the line ‘File Version’ in the column ‘Item Name’, per this next screenshot:

dm_security_properties-3
dm_security_properties-3

C) If the your file version is 6.0.100.65100 or earlier, your need to upgrade Desktop Manager. For example, the file above shown is infected (6.0.100.54472), and the Desktop software should be updated.

D) Update your Desktop Software to the latest patch for the BlackBerry Desktop Software version 4.5, 4.6, or 4.7. The KB article notes that the minimum BlackBerry Desktop Software version you can install to resolve this issue is 4.5. Click on this link to visit the Desktop Software Download area.

E) Alternatively, users who do not want to upgrade your BlackBerry Desktop Software, may install a patch from third-party software vendor Acresso™ Software to address the issue.

There is an ongoing discussion in this thread about this issue, to ask questions or to discuss.

Bitstream has just launched a private beta of a new J2ME browser called BOLT, which they claim is much faster than Opera Mini and utilizes less resources (thus saving on battery life).

BlackBerryCool has published a link to the private beta of BOLT. The Beta is still closed now, but opening up soon… so get your invite now. For some nice screenshots and features/comments on the browser, check out the review at BlackBerryCool.

2009 BlackBerry Lineup & $50 Pearl Flip!

$50 Pearl Flip!

Lots of tidbits here if you're a Rogers BlackBerry junkie....

BlackBerry Pearl 8220 for $50 - Remember that $50 Pearl Flip rumor? Looks like it's going to pan out, though instead of on T-Mobile it's $50 on Rogers on a 3 yr contract. You can check it out at FutureShop.ca (in-store special only)! The Pearl Flip isn't available on Rogers' website yet nor in Rogers stores, so whether this is Future Shop jumping the gun or there's something else at play here I'm not quite sure. And they have it in Black and Pink. Thanks to MobileSyrup for sending this in. Check it out here >>

Rogers BlackBerry 2009 lineup - BGR got wind of what BlackBerry smartphones are coming to Rogers for 2009, and it's lining up nicely with my logical predictions:

Rogers is coming back into the mix in 2009 with a pretty impressive lineup of BlackBerry handsets. This isn't by all means a definitive list, (read: possibly more devices, etc.) but it should whet your appetite a little bit. Without further ado, as told to us by one of those world-famous RIM ninjas, we have:

  • BlackBerry Curve 8900 in Q1
  • BlackBerry Storm variant in Q2
  • BlackBerry 9220 (Magnum, think BlackBerry Curve 8900 with 3G) in Q3
  • BlackBerry 9900 (Pluto, think Bold with touchscreen) in Q4

Good stuff all around for Rogers, minus the delay on the BlackBerry Curve 8900. The other day I made my prediction it would be pushed back in North America until early 2009 (vs. coming in November as has been expected) and this information confirms that. This also helps clarify the 9220 vs. 9900 confusion. Looks like Stop-N-Go's mid-August predictions of the 9220 that we broke here on CrackBerry.com were SPOT ON.

But at least more reasonable data plans and a $50 flip from Rogers has them looking less and less like Robbers by the minute (if only they would scrap this 3-yr contract stuff). Now that Telus & Bell are making way for supporting GSM, hopefully Rogers will give us less reasons to SMASH in 2009.

BlackBerry Magnum to appear at WES

BlackBerry Magnum

Jinkies, it looks like we weren’t totally sniffing the wrong tree when we pointed to 2009 as a possibility for a touchscreen BlackBerry on Rogers. Both BGR and BlackBerry News have posted today about a previously unseen BlackBerry that is reported to make an appearance at WES 2009: the BlackBerry Magnum.

So what exactly is the BlackBerry Magnum? Apparently only a U.S. HSDPA, BlackBerry Curve 8900 form factor with a BlackBerry Storm-like touchscreen. Which, although exciting, kind of sounds like a souped-up Palm Treo. Anyways, the amount of BlackBerrys RIM is looking to release is making my head spin. We’ll tell you more as we learn it.
